Mental health burden and self-efficacy among undergraduate students in the health sciences

Abstract Perceived professional competence and self-efficacy are complex terms, which have been widely identified in concurrent literature as predictive criteria of future development settlement higher education students. The current study aimed at exploring factors affecting perceived Social Work Nursing students the Hellenic Mediterranean University. employed a sample 313 (171 Work, 142 Nursing). questionnaire explored participants' sociodemographic academic factors, (Nursing Competency Self Efficacy (NCSE) Scale for Outgoing Students), mental health symptoms during past month (Symptom Checklist List, SCL 90-R) life stressors year (Life Stress Inventory, LSI). A total 67.3% participants reported year, with 17.6% reporting highest burden. All scales SCL-90 were found to negative linear relationship but no was detected regard stressors. Participants' age, working status, subject studies, well prior knowledge high preference subject, shown be significantly related self-efficacy. has several implications educational policy. Key messages Mental illness is major public concern significant impact on students’ achievement. University-based services could reach need facilitate early intervention.
